SS Jeremiah OBrien

Description
When in San Francisco, you don’t want to miss touring the SS Jeremiah O'Brien. Located on Pier 45 in scenic Fisherman’s Wharf, the Jeremiah O'Brien is a National Treasure. There are only two surviving WWII Liberty Ships in the world, and the SS Jeremiah O'Brien is the only one in its original WWII configuration. Why is touring the O’Brien a living history lesson? Because she is a D-Day veteran. The ship made 11 trips between England and Omaha Beach that fateful month of June, 1944. In 1994, the SS Jeremiah O'Brien sailed back to Normandy under her own steam for the 50th anniversary of D-Day. Of the original 5,000 ship armada that participated in the D-Day invasion, the O’Brien was the only one to make it back for the 50th anniversary celebration. While on board, explore the engine room (the location of all the engine room scenes in the movie Titanic); the Flying Bridge; the 5 gun tubs; the museum (with its huge D-Day diorama given to the ship by the French people in gratitude for helping liberate them) and the ship store. But most of all, simply soak in the historical monument that is the SS Jeremiah O'Brien.
